Landscape Architecture, Residential
Subdued, geometric landscape frames expansive lake view for this residence

Seated on a peninsula with unobstructed views of Lake Minnetonka, this home and landscape embrace the enormous scale of the lake. Working on a site with dramatic topographical changes, we collaborated with the architect to position the main floor of the house on the highest point of the land to grasp the best view of the water, while grounding the lower floor to the surrounding terrain.

The refined and subtle geometry of this landscape is highlighted through limestone edging. When viewed from above, it reveals a network of interlocking lines that guide the eye to the water beyond.

The long entry drive bends and rises through the forest, with the house emerging on a flat court. The sense of confinement created by the forest contrasts with the view of the lake, visible through the transparent entryway.
