The design for the Vjerison Residence creates varied private environments for outdoor entertaining within a highly visible urban lot in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Positioned on a steep hill adjacent to a prominent city lake, Coen + Partners sited the home to provide dramatic views to the lake. A limestone pool terrace extends as a plinth around the first level living spaces and pool house; the perimeter retaining wall provides privacy for the terrace. A wood deck for sunbathing anchors the outer edge of the swimming pool. An outdoor fireplace and seating area at the pool terrace offers flexible gathering space for the young clients. At the far edge, the pool terrace is framed by a row of Birch trees.
Coen + Partners designed several smaller courtyards for private dining or entertaining. A sheltered white limestone aggregate court is used for private dinners and small gatherings; the court is punctured by a single specimen Hawthorne tree.
